Established in the summer of 2003, Bone Densitometry is an additional valuable diagnostic tool for the patients of Barry's Bay and area. The program promotes bone health and prevention of osteoporosis, early detection of osteoporosis, and treatment.
Another successful partnership with Renfrew Victoria Hospital, the Bone Mineral Density (BMD) studies are performed here at St. Francis Memorial Hospital and sent to Renfrew Victoria Hospital for interpretation by Dr. D. Lyons. The BMD program at St. Francis Memorial Hospital is accredited with the Canadian Association Of Radiologists.

What is Bone Densitometry?
Bone Densitometry is a low radiation instrument designed to measure the patient's Bone Mineral Content in the vertebral or femoral area. Bone Densitometry detects subtle bone changes and offers physicians information on the condition and fracture risk of the patient's bones throughout the body.

Any man or women who are at risk of Osteoporosis

- Family history
- Past history of fragility fractures
- Menopausal women (especially premature menopause and surgical menopause)
- Greater risk are the older postmenopausal women or longstanding menopause
- Increasing age
- Poor nutrition
- Low calcium intake
- Inactivity
- Vitamin D deficiency
- Tobacco use
- Alcohol abuse
- Hypogonadism in men
- Weight below 57kgs (125lbs)
- Steroid Therapy
- Thyroid hormone replacement
