St. Francis Memorial Hospital is a 20 bed, fully accredited facility, offering medical, and complex continuing care. Special inpatient services include palliative care, diabetes clinic, telemedicine and Cardiac Rehabilitation. A two bed Hospice is directly down the hall from our inpatient unit. The hospital has an extensive ambulatory care program with over 10,000 emergency visits per year. A six-station satellite hemodialysis unit is located at the St. Francis Memorial Hospital in Barry’s Bay.

Come join us! As a result of internal growth at SFMH, we are hiring casual Diagnostic Medical Sonographer with our Diagnostic Imaging Department.

Pay Grid: $36.84 - $51.76 /hour

Position Summary:

Under indirect supervision and direction of a radiologist, the Sonographer works independently and is responsible for accurately and efficiently performing all routine sonographic imaging.   Ensure patient safety and quality of image production to ensure accurate timely diagnosis can be made.  Assumes responsibility for designated areas of procedures as required and may have individual responsibility for specified duties in the absence of the Department Charge Technologist.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Performs general ultrasound examinations within the scope of their professional and clinical qualifications.
  • The technologists will be responsible for:
    • Patient comfort and safety
    • Patient preparation
    • Quality Analysis of all imaging documentation/requisitions prior to imaging
    • Proper patient imaging
    • Provides immobilization devices as required
  • The Sonographer will have knowledge in the use of the Ultrasound equipment, including performance of all Quality Control procedures as well as actively participate in all departmental review of Quality Assurance and Quality Control Activities.
  • Initiates communication to service technician if equipment is not maintaining appropriate standards.  Ensuring that Charge Technologist is informed of any equipment performance issues.
  • Ensures accurate and detailed documentation of patient information to ensure accuracy of radiologist’s report.
  • Input observed findings into Powerscribe for reading radiologist.
  • Responsible for high level disinfection of ultrasound probes and maintaining appropriate and accurate patient records.
  • Consults with radiologist directly (over the phone) in regards to urgent reports and consults with radiologist to ensure satisfactory imaging of complex cases.
  • Independently uses organizational and time management skills with the ability to set priorities.  Proactively addresses issues that arise to ensure that delays in patient care do not occur. 
  • Friendly and courteous to both patients and staff.  Demonstrates the ability to support and embrace the philosophy of Service Excellence and patient and Family Centered Care.
  • Utilized computer skills to ensure that all procedure pathways are complete to ensure efficient exam reporting by radiologists.
  • Selects proper technical factors on an individual basis and maintaining the policy As Low As Reasonably Allowed (ALARA) and provides protection in accordance with prescribed safety standards.
  • Responsible for delegated areas in the performance of routine examination.
  • Participates in booking process with Diagnostic Imaging booking clerk and helps with protocoling seeing timelines for examinations using established standards.
  • In the absence of supervisor, may be designated as acting supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as required by the Diagnostic Imaging Charge Technologist.

Qualifications:

  • Current Registration with CMRITO (College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario)
  • Graduate from an accredited Canadian Ultrasound Program or equivalent
  • Sonography Canada credentialed is preferred
  • Maintain individual professional liability insurance as outlined by CMRITO.
  • Annual certification for users of Trophon High Level Disinfection Unit
  • Strong clinical skills and ability work under minimal supervision
  • Excellent problem solving
  • Computer skills
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job
